This travel ninja needs Panama sun, which, unfortunately for the kids, is not super Christmasy. So…the compromise was giving the kids a super duper Christmasy cold experience and then we surf, sun, and sandia-smoothie it up in Panama.
Fair is fair. Plus…I don’t do gifts. I do gifting experiences. Hello. Enneagram 7 here.
New York never gets old for me. The only thing OLD around here is ME. But, I’m not that old that I can’t take on a travel challenge. Here are all the Christmasy New York things to do in less than 48 hours.
Take the 6:00am flight Friday morning. Spend one night. Get back at midnight Saturday.
We did all the things and it was such a blast we want to make it a tradition!
A visit to Lillie’s Victorian Establishment and we didn’t wanna leave! If you need to find the Christmas cheer.. it’s right here, my dear!
We kept going back and forth on what show to watch. We finally decided on Phantom again even tho we’d all seen it. It’s just one of those shows we’ve watched during Christmas time a few years back and it just felt right to see it again! No regrets!
You know we did all the food.
Then one last stop, new to all of us.. was a stop at the Vanderbilt One. THIS was awesome!! Except for all the long lines… forget the lines. The views were fabulous!!
And just like that, it is definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
My very first fun trip of the last year of my 30s began in… New York!
I decided that the theme for all my trips this year is all about SPA! So… the first place I needed to go was my newest favorite spa… Modrn Sanctuary. I got my chakras all aligned for this fall- winter season and I’m feeling great!
It was a fantastic trip of feel good favorites. There wasn’t anything new, except I finally got into Il Sodi! Other than that… I ran out of school on a Friday after the bell rang… to good food, relaxations, and some shopping in NYC!
New York is always a favorite!

If you’re wondering what it’s like to travel in NYC right now… basically… have your ID and Vaccine card (photo) handy if you plan on visiting and staying inside. In certain locations, because everyone was vaccinated to enter, you didn’t have to wear a mask.
Fancied up. Filled to the gills. And. Funned out. Until next time New York!
I easily identified myself as a city girl. Main reason? The city is where the food is at. But for real… that fast pace, mean muggin, and in constant suspicion attitude…well…that is all me. All day, every day, everywhere.
That’s MY city!
So, the happiness I felt to finally find myself in one of my favorite cities in the world… New York, New York… just pure excitement! This city has never intimidated me in the past. In fact, it has consistently inspired and energized me. New York has always been my “bright lights and late nights” escape. Just an hour and a half flight from Raleigh, and I’m partaking in the world’s best concerts and broadway shows, amazing fashion… and did I mention the food? New York food is what dreams are made of.
But, dang, did I get soft, slow, and southern during the pandemic?
Landing Friday evening, suddenly and overwhelmingly, my once favorite New York City, felt too peopley. Too much. Too loud. Too crowded. Too many smells. Too intimidating?? I found myself caught off guard, just a tad, and questioning my city girl status. Do I even like the city anymore?!
The point of this New York trip was not “bright lights and late nights”… it was… Cathy and I, balancing chakras and reducing inflammation in salt rooms. I kinda forgot about the “city” part of it all.
Side tracking… I also came to NYC to get real New York pizza. That is a must. So, the very first stop was to one of my favorite pizza places ever, Joe’s Pizza. Yes. We stood in that line…
I miss this pizza, everyday!
And that line was… too long, too pushy, too intense, and too rushed. Our walk back to the hotel was too far away.
Where did mean muggin, fast walking, travel ninja go?
Judiciously. We ended our first New York night as any 40 year old in NYC would.
Side tracking… I am not even 40 yet, but, according to my calculations, I have been 40 for at least 3 years because I love to round up… unless I am telling someone how much I spent on something. I kinda take off by 10s. “Yes, I bought these shoes for 30 bucks”-when in reality it was 39.99 plus tax!
So, back to the story… us 40 year olds went to wind down from all the excitement at our tranquil roof top terrace hotel. Ease into the city life.
Yeah, not tranquil. At all! We entered what seemed like a rooftop club and we were shell shocked. Like, not kidding one bit, we stood there frozen, deer in club lights, not knowing what to do.
I think our server had experienced this type of “pandemic side effect” of “social awkwardness” because somehow she gracefully guided us to our table.
Thankfully…after a little people watching, and some 90s music, we started to adjust to the NYC vibe.
Those lights!Old fashion… because I’m old.
Wipe the brow. The DJ played some Nelly and Chiquita Suelta. These city girls just needed a southern minute to adjust.
We knew we were good when we finally got the hang of the elevator situation. Suddenly, I found myself bossing people around and directing traffic onto the elevators. There she is, that city girl!
Travel Ninja is back!
Saturday is for spa-ing (why isn’t this an acceptable gerund).
This trip was all about the spa!
If you know me for even one second, you know I love to spa. I was hooked on that feeling at my very first spa experience in Charleston, SC. There I was, 11 months pregnant with my first kid. When I got to lay my 98 pound belly into a pregnancy massage table… let me tell you, I was in heaven.
And I’ve been a steady spa goer ever since.
I know spa days, spa weekends, spa getaways, and spa treatments are luxurious! And boy do I understand the judgment that comes with this, let’s say, “indulgence”. That’s neither here nor there because for me, spa-ing is also about sanity, wellness and health. Self care. I am prone to suffer from stress so I love taking care of myself.
Cathy and I, we bonded over many things when we first met. We are certified clean freaks. We worked hard on the school PTA as presidents. And… we both have an affinity for spa-ing!
Cathy found the Modrn Sanctuary several months back and we knew we had to make a trip to NYC for a post vaccination spa vacation. This spa is very unique in comparison to ones that I usually spa at. Check these services out.
Salt Room: Ions from the salt purify the air to heal respiratory issues such as allergies and increases energy, reduces stress, and absorbs irritants. I did a hypnotherapy session in the salt room and came out happy as a… girl who was at the spa.
Coolest room ever!
Chakra Sensory: Recently, I have read a lot about vibration therapy for anxiety. Heart-beat like taps can bring awareness and calm you down during stressful events. For example, during public speaking. This therapy reminded me a lot of the chakra sensory bed. Certain vibrations were hit at each chakra point, bringing energy, awareness, and calm. Repeating an affirmation during vibrations made the experience a little deeper. The lights also connected to emotions. I know… crazy. But don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.
Affirmation “Let it go” and “I give myself the care and attention that I deserve”
Lymphatic Facial: Someone canceled their appointment last minute and because I was lounging around drinking cucumber water in the lobby, I was the lucky winner to receive a discounted facial. I instantly became friends with the esthetician. We exchanged book recommendations, restaurant suggestions, and for the first time, I got legitimate information about my skin with all its hyperpigmentation/melasma.
Oxygen Meditation: Won’t lie, I have always wanted to try this for some odd reason. I might be obsessed with gaining more energy any where I can get it. I chose to infuse some frankincense into my oxygen delivery to restore cells. Benefits include: alertness, fast muscle recovery, improved sleep, and reduced anxiety. I thought I would feel super energized but, actually, I felt an overall sense of happiness. It was the last thing I did, so maybe it was just the cumulation of the days activities.
To top off the spa experience, we ended our night at Aire Baths. This spa is located in a restored textile factory from 1883. Its ancient Greek and Roman theme gives off a sense of eerie calm and intrigue. There isn’t anything like it. It’s mystical and perfect. I’d say the only thing I don’t like about this place, is that they don’t let you bring your phone in for pictures. Probably for good reason. I’m probably the only person who cares about that. I am a pretty darn good paparazzi picture taker, but I got caught taking a photo here several years ago. This time around, I didn’t attempt it. So here are the pics from their website.
Our trip didn’t go without a donut stop, a bagel stop, an art stop, a Peloton stop, a Times Square stop, and a Tony di Napoli’s stop.
Eh, not the best doughnuts.
I am happy to say, that as much as I adore living in the charming south, my city girl identity is still going strong. She was suppressed for far too long, but glad to see her back… weaving in and out of crowded streets, clutching that purse, and not smiling and waving at people.
This is exactly the trip I needed…not for the bright city lights, but for the chakra sensory lights. Not for the crowded streets, but for laughing and crying with my bestie… it is so good for the soul. Not for the food… who you kidding… definitely FOR the food!
Geared up for bigger trips yet to come! Balanced, happy, and in a peaceful place.
I tried quite a few gluten free pizzas over the past couple months. J & S Pizza in Apex and V Pizza in Cary were pretty good. Truth is, I don’t feel like I can be a gluten free pizza judge. GF pizza just doesn’t do it for me. If you have an amazing GF recommendation, please send it my way. I am really wanting to like gluten free pizza. As of now, at the end of the day… I’ll suffer with “gluten bloats” for a slice of real pizza.
I have 10 NC pizzas that are tied for number one. Honorable mentions: Riccis in Cary and Pizza Times in Raleigh… I just wrote about them in another post so I can’t double post. Right?! I don’t know. I love how I make up rules as I go!
Oakwood City Box Pizza in Raleigh.
Cugino Forno Pizza in Greensboro
Benny Capitale’s Pizza in Raleigh– because size matters
Brothers of NY Pizza in Cary
Pizzeria Toro in Durham
Pizzería Mercato in Chapel Hill
Hutchinsons Garage Pizza in Durham
Hummingbird in Raleigh-deep dish cheese pie
Roost Beer Garden Belted Goat at Fearrington in Chapel Hill
Tazza
* all pizza judgments are based on the plain cheese or margarita version. Pepperoni pizzas pictured because I ate the cheese prior to pics! Oops!
Every time I order pizza, I think of the Pizza Town SNL skit with Aziz Ansari.
It haunts me. If you ever see me laughing for what seems like no reason, I am thinking about this skit! Click here
Here’s the next round of pizza stops we’ve had in the area.
Primo Pizza
I was introduced to this pizza a couple years ago. A few of us teachers from Centennial would stop here occasionally. We tried the calzone after a workshop one day and it was delicious! During the pandemic, it became one of my favorites simply because it has a perfect drive thru situation. This is solid NY style pizza. I love the crust.
Cary’s Primo Pizza
Raleigh Pizza Times
This might be my favorite pizza in the area. Definitely, top 5 or sure. Roman and I went here for a date night a couple nights ago. We couldn’t stop eating it. This pizza might be the reason I love Raleigh so much.
Maybe I should move to RaleighRaleigh Pizza Times: My Raleigh go to
Di Fara Pizza
Gonna give this newly opened Cary Pizza joint another chance. I think it was because it was opening week or maybe it’s the NY filtered water… we thought the pizza was sloppy. I loved it when I was in NY many years ago so hopefully it will be better next time we try it.
Cary’s Di Fara Pizza- great outdoor seating
Of course, we had Ricci’s pizza this week as well. That is a given. I tried their white pizza for the first time and thought it was great! While taking Gi to her gymnastics meet this weekend, we ate what we thought is the second worst pizza we’ve ever had. I won’t even mention the name of the place because I’d like to forget that experience all together. Plus, it was in Virginia Beach…and we’re not making this a national pizza thing.
We ARE continuing our national donut tour, however. We stopped at Sugar Plum bakery for this Texas Glazed donut.
I ABHOR waiting in line, but I did, for this huge donut! 😊
Our busy schedules resurrected this week! We had everything from a travel gymnastics meet to an inauguration! There was some stress eating and some pleasure eating. Overall, an amazing foodie week!
Pizza Stops
As my ninja turtle friends would say, “truth, justice and a slice of pizza”. The inauguration brought some truth and justice (issues) to the forefront, and I ate pizza 4 times this week.
I accidentally left my wallet at home when we went out for lunch one day, so that led us to plan B… an online order from Pizzeria Faulisi in Cary. There is nothing but love for this wood fired pizza. With a mix of local Raleigh and authentic Italian ingredients..the flavor is fantastic. You’re going for more of a Neapolitan pizza here, and it is definitely worth the try!
The next pizza stop occurred when I almost ran out of gas (this would the 4th time running out of gas in this Jeep) and I noticed we were close to a pizza joint called Vicinos in Morrisville. You can’t just pass by a place that has a 4.8 google rating. We savored the crust and the NY pizza style. I’ll definitely have to do a side by side comparison of a couple pies with this one included.
Another night this week, I didn’t feel like cooking because of a massive headache, so the kids picked up a pie from our go-to place, Ricci‘s. Ricci’s is a mile away from our house and it really is top notch. We are so lucky to have it… from service to food, you can’t go wrong. Their garlic rolls (with cheese) are on another level. Ricci’s is an at least once a week stop.
The last pizza stop was at Trophy in Raleigh. I was passing by from Wye Hill and I thought… Why not? This pizza is the epitome of great bar pizza-feel good, crunchy, gooey, and cheesy!
Cary got some love this week! I was excited to start some readings for my grad class and nothing goes better with readings, than a hot cup of coffee to accompany. Brew, is an all time favorite and the place I stop at before hitting up Dom’s Bagels. DoNUT underestimate their doughnuts either. I order a dozen bagels each week because I just can’t go very long without Dom’s!
With drives back and forth to Stretch Lab and gymnastics this week, I discovered Esteamed Coffee’s location and it was the highlight of my week. I fell in love with their mission to support those with disabilities as they seek employment. Such a great place with great hot chocolate!
Sometimes, when you’re in Cary, you just have to stop at the old soda fountain shop for ice cream. Ashworth Drugs is our little old town pharmacy and is known for it’s hotdogs too. I can’t do hot-dogs tho. You know, the whole vegetarian thing and all.
Speaking of vegetarian, my all time favorite Apex restaurant is Provincial because NO one does a better vegetable plate. I was so happy to make it here this week. The veggie plate is superb every single time I have it. The plate is seasonal and rotating! It has been over a year and it was so good to be home! Be sure to order the kid’s Mac n Cheese. No shame.
Brew, Vanilla Latte with Almond MilkDom’s upside down donuts, Cinnimon Sugar and Asiago bagels with cream cheese… and always a plain bagel with butter Esteamed Coffee: 4 hot chocolates please!Mint Chip from Ashworth DrugsProvincial: Broccoli, Whipped Potatoes, Zucchini, Brussel Sprouts, Rice, Carrots, and Kids Mac N Cheese 😋
Raleigh Rants
The best food I had this week was at Wye Hill Kitchen and Brewing. I kid you not, you must go for the most delicious BBQ fries and beer cheese you will ever have. I know, you’re suppose to go for the beer and the views, but I urge you, ALSO go for the fries and their amazing sangria too. The outdoor seating was impeccable, with several heaters, so this cold wimp, was just fine. I can’t wait to go back again! Maybe I’ll get my Raleigh Beer Trail passport stamped next time!
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Thanks to my daughter’s gymnastics meet, I got to travel to a South Carolina beach, in January! I have to admit, my Covid fears are mostly centered around being in an inclosed space, CLOSE to many unknown people not wearing masks. Being a spectator to this meet gave me the chills. Fortunately for me, I was encouraged to drop her immuned-self off with her coach, while I kept a virtual eye on her from the hotel. This is the kind of gym mom I was meant to be. She had a great time, receiving several medals, and I provided donuts and views. This cute donut shop called Peace, Love and Little Donuts had really funky fun toppings.
North Myrtle, SCPeace, Love, and Little Donuts (oreo, salted pretzel, fruity pebbles, chocolate sprinkles, Banana split, m&ms, strawberry cheesecake, coffee cake, Reeses, Samoa, apple pie, s’mores)
That was quite a foodie week! Now, I have to detox…but Triangle Restaurant Week is upon us! I better get to running laps!
Gallivanting around Sir Walter’s city usually takes the edge off of my wanderlust itch and makes me feel great about supporting local. Raleigh is near and dear to my heart because I spent the greatest college days at both Meredith College and NC State. Seeing my city flourish and consistently recorded on “Best Places to Live” lists, makes me proud. This city has gone through its fair share of struggles during the pandemic but, it is still thriving. This week, I took the 20 minute drive from Cary to continue discovering new gems and revisiting old favorites. A few highlights…
Stop For A Drink At STIR
Stir it up, little darling, and satisfy your heart’s desire with amazing craft cocktails and a side of ceviche. It’s a laid back scene so you’ll find a diverse assortment of comfort foods to warm you up during these cold days and maybe you will hear Bob Marley playing in the background. They offer food and beverage kits to-go and provide a heated patio, so, overall, it’s a win win!
Whiskey Bramble
Pizza at DeMo’s
Staying true to my resolution, pizza reviews have commenced. All reviews are based on a plain cheese pizza. If you can’t get the basics right, then what’s the point. This Raleigh pizza joint will be high on my final list. I am in love with the tangy but sweet sauce and crunchy but chewy crust combination. I’m all about that New York attitude and DeMo’s shines with it in every slice. Also, have you tried their cheese fries?!
Raleigh’s North Carolina Museum of Art
If you’re feeling bored or get “kicked out” of the house, like I did, the NC Museum of Art is a cool place to hang… by yourself with 7 security guards. Guess it’s just me that gets kicked out of the house.
I love this museum venue for many reasons. It’s got an artsy walk path outside, the Iris Restaurant has fancy food, and the museum hosts awesome movie nights and concerts at the outside amphitheater.
Obviously, many of those events won’t be happening for a while, but it was a nice change of scenery to take an art walk this week. If you go, reserve a free timed ticket for entrance. Be sure to buy those Golden Mummies exhibit tickets that begin in March.
Not. A. Soul.Maybe my favorite piece. Deception. Humanity.A mirrored light show!
Coffee Comparisons
This summer I read, The Tea Girl Of Hummingbird Lane and it made me give up my coffee addiction and jump into tea sipping. It was a good 5 months of being coffee-free. Then, I went to Panama. It was café con leches all day, everyday. When I got back to the negative 900 degree weather of NC, I found that just ordering a Panamanian bag of coffee and making it myself was exponentially better than searching for satiation elsewhere.
Still, there is something comforting about ordering a hot latte and secretly comparing it to a Panamanian cup when I’m out and about. While I was Raleigh roaming, I couldn’t help but warm my hands up with a try from these two yummy coffee shops. (Meeple’s Brew in Morrisville and Iris in downtown Raleigh)
Service is 💯 A teacher knows best.. I am sure a teacher decorated and instilled the 6 feet apart rule perfectly!
I thank my kids for kicking me out of the house and making me step away from my Brigerton Binge! How does one even have a conversation these days without talking about Brigerton!?
The word on my scandal papers is that as the the 1st semester of school came to an end this week for my kids, they got down with catching up on work. My daughter informed me she had a 26 in Spanish class because she couldn’t turn in her flip grid videos due to the terrible WiFi in Panama. Umm, excuse me?! My youngest revealed that he had missed 7 days worth of math lessons. Yep. Imagine my mood. So, in order to keep my calm and not be on top of the children like a pestering mother I am really good at being…I gladly took that drive up to Raleigh.
I am happy to update that I got a good little adventure while the kids caught up. My daughter recorded all those flip grid videos, including her Rachel Ray quesadilla recipe in Spanish, and sent them to her teacher. She bumped that 26 to an A. Littlest kid, well, he pulled some late nights, but he got it done and got it done magnificently, also earning an A.
A happy ending to our scandal papers! (Signed-Travel Ninja, not Lady Whisteldown!)
Is it just me or was that the longest first week of the year ever!!?
Still feels 2020 ish
I am of the belief that if you’re not changing, then you’re accepting. That’s not necessarily either a good or bad thing. You make it what it is as it pertains to you. Acceptance and change are both great things and it is what drives me to love a good resolution.
Sure, 80 percent of resolutions dissolve by February and only a whopping 8 percent of people attain their resolutions by years end… but what I have accepted about myself, is that I love to attempt change. I win some and I lose some.
2021 New Year Resolutions
* Routinelytake care of my skin.
This resolution includes finding a regimen I love that will make me enjoy the commitment of applying a minimum of a 4 night a week routine. The hope is for every day use… but let’s be real. I need this skin routine to be doable during travel and not take 67 minutes to complete.
Just started using this kit and so far I’m loving it!
Let’s remember…USE SUNBLOCK EVERY DAY!!
I love me some water and in the past, the convenience of grabbing a plastic bottle encouraged my healthy H2O habits. I was always drinking water. I noticed however, all around our house laid unfinished plastic water bottles, mostly from the kids, but admittedly from me sometimes. Our family vowed to rid of the plastic bottle habit completely. We did it, but my water intake has suffered and I can see it all over my body’s rattle snake skin. More water for the skin this year!
Me at 3:00 today NOT reaching my water goal!
* Hormonal Overhaul. Let’s just say, the one day PMS vibe has turned to a pretty much everyday punk mood. I’m sure it’s partly due to world events but I still find a need to do something about it…
Social media has never been an issue of anxiety for me until recently. All the crazy news and everyone’s divisive posts kinda get me down now. I don’t care about Facebook one bit. Instagram is my jam tho. I love seeing travel and food pictures and enjoy seeing what my friends are up to. I like seeing JLo post about her new skin care line. Sebastian Maniscalco clips always make me laugh! Call me crazy, but I like to see others doing well and happy. Instagram has morphed into a more negative platform lately, specially from celebrities. Even positive posts have a ton of comments that can bring the happy clown down.
Seriously, you can’t even post that you paid it forward at the Starbucks line anymore. All of a sudden by doing that, you’re enabling “Bougie Betty” and you’re just WRONG… WRONG… because you should have done something BETTER for a more important charity. I get the sentiment, but dang… people are just doing the best they can during a pandemic.
I plan to unfollow every person, which thankfully does not generally consist of my friends, that posts something hateful in my point of view. This is not to be confused with unfollowing people I don’t agree with. I love the diversity and have dear friends on both sides and all sides of the spectrum. However, the posts lacking tact and filled with tearing another person down and telling them they are not enough or just plain wrong, is not for me. I will follow the person who is paying it forward to who might actually be “Bipolar Betty”…
…like and love. You do you, right!?
Also, I want to revamp my supplement intake. Right now it includes everything from CBD gummies to ashwagandha. I just want to organize my supplement intake into less pills, make sure I’m getting everything I need and nothing I don’t. This below is not conducive to travel.
Anything to keep calm, focused, and sleeping well!
* FoodieFuture
When I worked in Raleigh, I enjoyed going to my favorite pizza shop after work at least once a week. Then the pandemic hit, and maybe from watching too many Barstool Sports Pizza Reviews, I started getting take out pizza from different shops and comparing them. This year I would love to try more pizza shops in the Raleigh Cary area and then make a “best of” list. I would love to do this with friends!
Pizzeria Toro is 💯 (Durham- pre-pandemic)
My North Carolina Donut list needs to be freshened up as well. There are a few shops in the Charlotte area for me to try. I’d like to retry a few shops I haven’t been to in years as well!
Wilmington NC (The Donut Inn)
I love cooking and baking and the pandemic has lead the entire family into some amazing cooking competitions and discovering new recipes. This is something I want to continue doing!
* Travel Goals
Let’s tread lightly on this one. This year, I would like to see mountains and see beaches. I want to add a visit to a new spa and hit up a vineyard if possible. These trips can be anywhere in the world… but I understand the restrictions… I may just be discovering my backyard a little deeper!
My crazy hope is to get to Boston this year. I am taking a class from Harvard so it would be nice to use their library, get my student card, and maybe explore Boston a little. I foresee us staying in our beautiful state of NC quite a bit so a mountains and beach trip is definitely doable and it could lead us to scratching off some foodie goals and NC bucket list items like the Land of Oz, Jockey Ridge, and Mount Airy (little Mayberry). All with safety first.
Resolution- Nerding out in one of my favorite cities
We managed an amazing US road trip last year, so I think we can make another safe one happen again. I’d like to add states the kids have never been to. None the less, we will stay cautiously optimistic!
* Wear less black. My closet is color coded for my sanity. There is a hefty chunk of black clothes to the left and then a trickle of the rainbow down to the right. This comes from my music performance days and now pandemic days. All my yoga pants are black…but I am hoping colors brighten my mood a bit.
*Include Spanish in my everyday life. I just want to keep up with my Spanish a little better. I want to listen to more Spanish music, subscribe to Ted Talks en Español, and my phone still has Spanish settings on.
So there’s my list! Fun and so easy to give up on all of them by February! I think I’m off to a good start!
